History of The Walk
Yon Armstrong
was only four years old when he was diagnosed with the life threatening disease, sickle cell anemia. After his diagnosis, Yon required repeated blood transfusions for treatment of symptoms. Over the course of time, his transfusions had become more frequent and painful. Ultimately, Yon had so many blood transfusions that antibodies started to build and his body began to see the proteins in donated blood as foreign bodies, leading to a rejection reaction. On January 15, 2002, Yon Armstrong died from complications from sickle cell. The Walkathon was originally named in his honor.
Walk in Memory of...Kia Slaughter
Kia Slaughter was born in Columbus, Ohio on April 30, 1980 to Jerome Slaughter and Cherrita Tidwell. She was a student at Independence High School. Kia attended Mt. Carmel Nursing School because she had a desire to especially help those with sickle cell anemia. Kia fought a good fight during her 24 years of life. Kia went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, November 7, 2004. Sadly, many people are still unaware of Sickle Cell Disease. The money raised during the Walk-a-Thon will go to the Ohio Sickle Cell & Health Assn. for education and scholarships.
